As a nursing student, you have a lot on your plate. Beyond classes and clinicals, you may also be thinking about your future employment. What kind of patients and coworkers do you want to work with? What kind of department or speciality do you want to work in? And what will it be like to apply what you’ve learned in school to real life?
A nursing internship can help take away some of the uncertainty and also help you land that first job. Summer camps across the country are now hiring nursing students for 7-week internships working in their residential Health Centers.
Being a student nurse at camp will be one of the most rewarding and impactful summer jobs around. You will provide routine and emergency care to campers under the guidance of a physician and other RNs and educate staff about health concerns. Children won’t be your only patients, either! Camp staff who spend the entire summer working with the campers also rely on the Health Center team for medical care.
Our resident health centers consist of a doctor, an infirmary manager, a team of registered nurses, and in some cases an EMT or Athletic Trainer. The Health Center team oversees the medical care of our campers throughout the entire summer, including those with unique situations such as allergies, chronic health issues, and those requiring regular medication.
As a Nursing Student interning at camp, everyday will be a learning experience. Your skills and knowledge will grow tremendously helping to ease the transition from nursing school to real life nursing. With a camp nursing internship on your résumé, you will have a serious leg up on your peers, and a stronger skill set and confidence in yourself that will help you take the next steps toward pursuing your career. Plus: spend your summer working in a beautiful, scenic setting!
