Recommended Tax Filing Information

for Exchange Visitors from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs

Staff members who earned taxable income will have to file a return, and since in general exchange visitors are considered non-resident aliens you will likely need to file a Form 1040NR.

Please note that common tax preparation software (e.g. TurboTax) typically do not support filing with a Form 1040NR. Using such software is not reccomended and make you appear to be filing erroneously as a U.S. residents. Doing so may intentionally or unintentionally make the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) suspect you of tax fraud.

Please also be cautious of individuals or companies offering to file their tax returns. For more information on “ghost preparers,” please click here. For more information on common tax scams and how to report them, please click here.
